Very good account of a man’s life growing up in 19th century Lithuania, immigration to America and experiences as he goes west.

Hard to believe a young Jewish immigrant with chutzpah made it out to the wilderness of Long Island where he had successes and failures and then went West to the real wilderness with wife and 3 kids in tow to start numerous business again both successes and failures. Very interesting account of a Jew in foreign territory with a lot of guts.
Enjoyable reading.

This is an interesting story told by the author's grandfather. It is written in first person and you can hear his voice. You feel like you are sitting in the same room with him while he relates his journey from shtetl to New York City and onto the US west coast, with stops in between. What makes this different is most Jewish immigrant stories stop in New York City or some other major city on the East Coast. But this rags-to-riches tale describes late 19th century and early 20th century Utah, Idaho, and the West Coast. I really enjoyed his description and interaction with Native Americans and the famous and infamous. I found the story compelling.

The style of writing is not classic, but I wouldn't expect that of an immigrant. It's part of the charm.

There are millions of stories about the Eastern European immigrants. This is one that is different. I'm looking forward to the next book.

This book was a delightful read and gave me renewed appreciation for the challenges many of our ancestors faced when immigrating to America with limited means. Harry Jacobs lived "the American Dream" with huge successes counterbalanced with depressing failures, yet he maintained an attitude of "can do" through it all. Highly recommended!

What a wonderful journey and what a wonderful story. It reminded me of my own grandparent’s story, as they also moved from one side of the country (Australia) in pursuit of their dreams.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it. It is a great example of determination.
